Breaking down the 180 degree rule
Line of action- an imaginary line drawn between a subject
and the item or person they are interacting with OR a line drawn along a path
that a subject is moving on
Establishing shot – gives the viewer basic geography of the
scene / determines screen direction of the actors or action
Breaking the rule – for dramatic purposes and can create a
disoriented feeling
Neutral shot – placing the camera on the action line allows
you to cut to a shot on neither side
Shifting action lines – place shots within the establishing
arc / creates shifts with action in the scene / use camera movement to show a
shift / use neutral shots or cutaways
As characters move, the action line moves meaning that the
180 degrees is different
Sense of awareness to audience
