How are the feelings of the characters established within the sewer scene of 'The Third Man'?

How are the feelings of the characters established within the sewer scene of 'The Third Man'?

Within the sewer scene, the main character is faced towards an exit which is bright- he is blocking out the light as he is in the centre, this emphasises his power and stability. The lighting that he is in front of exaggerates the significance of the character. The 'vanishing point' is being blocked from view due to the main character which symbolises confusion, despair, loss and disorientation. The use of chiaroscuro creates a god like image of the main character. The cruciform symbolises Jesus, which emphasises the god like image, Jesus died for people's sins which is a representation of Harry Lime and how he is paying for sins of people in post war Europe - he is being sacrificed, just like Jesus was to help the greater good of others. The balancing point of this shot is within the middle of the screen almost like balance is being restored as past vanishing points have always been off screen, however, the vanishing point is being blocked which is a symbol that all hope is being blocked out and the 'restored balance' is now being taken away again.
Within this shot, the character are presented at the top of the screen which would represent the feeling of either being at the top of their mental state (feeling good), on the other hand it could be a representation of how they are going to come crashing down as the use of the light reflection is based on the falling water within the sewer. There is a large shadow of a man's body next to the water, which could symbolise the downfall as he is larger than the characters that we can see. His largeness could represent that he is more important than the characters present at the top of the shot. The dominating shadow emphasises the power and fear as a dark evil character with secrets is being presented at the bottom of the screen. The leading lines within the shot are on the balcony- almost trapping the characters within geometry. The vertices of the balcony leading lines emphasise the distortion illusion.
The use of the large space surrounding the main character emphasises the insignificance of him, and how he lacks importance- the darkness surrounding him could be a representation of the darkness within and how he feels isolated. The geometry of the shot (leading lines) are a representation of the repeated shapes which add illusion and therefore make the character smaller and less significant. The vertices cause separation and isolation which could symbolise how the character feels separated from everyone else and how he feels like the rest of the world is so far away when in reality- everything is in perspective.
